Hartnell unable to hold 21-point lead

Staff report • September 27, 2010

The Hartnell College football team started fast but faded at the end in a 55-38 loss to Chabot on Saturday at Salinas High Stadium.

Hartnell (0-3) broke out of the gates by scoring three straight touchdowns for a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. A 29-yard scoring run by Alvin Jelks and two touchdown passes by Austin Fales — 36 yards to Kevin Dorsey and 90 yards to Marquis Brooks — staked the Panthers to a three-touchdown lead.

Hartnell still clung to a 31-21 halftime lead, thanks to a 21-yard touchdown pass from Brad Smet to Dorsey and a 23-yard field goal by Jorge Rico. But Chabot rallied back to score seven straight touchdowns, taking the lead for good with 5:54 left in the third quarter.

Chabot scored two touchdowns in the third quarter within 20 seconds when it posted a sack, recovered a fumble and capitalized with a 17-yard scoring pass.

Fales, the freshman from Palma, was 22 of 26 for 285 yards and three touchdowns. Hartnell visits Los Medanos of Pittsburg Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
