After recovering a Los Medanos fumbled punt, Hartnell went 21 yards on four plays, with Alvin Jelks going the final three yards to cut the deficit to 27-13 early in the fourth quarter. The Panthers came right back and scored again on a 42-yard pass from Brad Smet to Marquis Brooks to pull within 27-20 with seven minutes to play. But a gamble by Hartnell in the final four minutes backfired. The Panthers went for it on fourth-and-three, but a quarterback sack turned the ball back to Los Medanos inside the Hartnell 20. Los Medanos then went 13 yards on eight plays for the clinching touchdown. Hartnell plays its final non-conference game Saturday in Reedley. The Panthers open the Coast Conference season Oct. 16 at Salinas High Stadium against Cabrillo.
