Staff report • October 11, 2010

The start of the Coast Conference season should be a welcome sight for the Hartnell College football team.

The Panthers ended their non-conference portion of the schedule Saturday with an 0-5 record after falling to host Reedley, 32-14.

Hartnell begins its conference season Saturday at 6 p.m. against Cabrillo at Salinas High Stadium.

Hartnell continued its habit of allowing scores in the final two minutes of the first half. Reedley scored twice in the final two minutes — the last coming on a 26-yard fumble return with 35 seconds left before halftime to stake Reedley to a 22-0 lead.

Twice in the first quarter Hartnell stopped Reedley inside the 20-yard-line.

The Panthers trailed 29-0 before scoring a pair of touchdowns in the final quarter.

A 72-yard interception return by Adrian Blue led to Hartnell's first score. Alvin Jelks scored on a two-yard run with 4:27 to play in the game.

Brad Smet then scored on a 19-yard run in the final seconds.

Hartnell was held to 49 yards rushing on 29 carries.

Kairo Small keyed the Hartnell defense with 12 tackles, including a pair of sacks. Defensive back Mark Ramos had 10 tackles while Blue, in addition to his interception, had seven tackles and four assists.
