The loss dropped the Panthers' Coast Conference record to 1-1 while San Jose City and Monterey Peninsula College remained tied for first at 2-0. MPC beat Cabrillo 21-7 Saturday. Five times Hartnell crossed mid-field but failed to score. The Panthers stayed close after Alvin Jelks scored the second of his two touchdowns early in the third quarter to bring Hartnell within 21-18. Hartnell's final drive began at its own 11-yard-line and reached the San Jose City 38. But a fourth-down pass fell incomplete, essentially ending the game. The Panthers took a 14-12 lead early in the second quarter after Marquis Brooks scored on an 11-yard run to close the first half and Jelks opened the second half with a 36-yard touchdown run. Hartnell, 1-6 overall, is home Saturday to play West Valley.
