After completing this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Describe how the Internet is changing the world by means of a process called convergence.

  • Tell what percentage of the population is telecommuting already.

  • Know where the hottest shopping sites are on the Net.

  • Gauge the context to which commercial advertising is paying for services available "for free" on the Internet.

  • Understand how government officials and politicians are using the Internet.

  • Realize how the Internet is revolutionizing the publishing industry.

  • Share the vision of how the Web is capable of hosting an interconnected world of research and scholarship.

  • Understand how the Net provides educators with a powerful medium for more actively involving students in the teaching and learning process.

Virtual Libraries

Virtual libraries are directories that contain collections of Internet or Web resources that have been reviewed and evaluated before they are included. For this reason, the resources are more likely to be accurate and authentic. In many cases, professional librarians create and maintain these virtual libraries.

Argus Clearinghouse

"The Internet's Premier Research Library." This is a collection of reviewed and rated Web sites to information about specific topics. Major categories range from Arts and Humanities to Social Sciences and Social Issues.

Internet Public Library

This site was created to provide Internet Library services and is structured similarly to a real library in terms of its collection and the services it provides. The major topics include: Reference, Arts & Humanities, Education, Health & Medical Sciences and Social Sciences.

Librarians' Index to the Internet

The Librarians' Index to the Internet is a directory leading the user to Web and Internet resources. Entries are arranged by subject, and individual entires are alphabetized within a subject area.

World Wide Web Virtual Library

Contains more than one hundred individual subjects arranged alphabetically. There is a category subtree (subject guide) and sorting by Library of Congress classification.
