Making the Most of Serf
The easiest way to move between the Internet Literacy website, which contains chapter notes, links to online resources, and supplementary materials, is to log onto Serf using the icon at the bottom of this web page. Use the Back and Forward buttons on our browser to move back and forth between the Serf syllabus and course exercises and the website without having to log in and out of Serf. Remember to log out of Serf when you are finished with your session. At various points throughout the textbook, you will be directed to Interlit website to click on hypertext links and visit a selection of websites. You are currently viewing Interlit website for our class. The links referred to within the textbook are found at the end of each chapter web page under the heading Online Resources. In addition, there is an Interlit website maintained at the University of Delaware to support their section of this course. If you wish to visit this site and check out their online links, the URL is: www.udel.edu/interlit Email Problems? If you receive a message that your email address has not been specified when you try clicking on either an email or submit link, you will need to manually type this information into your Netscape browser preferences. Go to Edit, Preferences, and double click on Mail & Groups. A drop down menu will appear. Click on Identity and type in your email address. For example, I would type in: jlagier@hartnell.edu. Sending Email to Your Instructor To send an email to your instructor, go to the bottom of the Serf screen, go to the box labeled Email, click on Instructor, click on your instructor's name. Sending Email to Classmates Serf allows you to send and receive email from your classmates. To add your name and email address to the class list, go to the Email box at the bottom of the Serf screen and click on Register. Enter your email address and click the Register button. To see which classmates have registered their email addresses, go to the Email box at the bottom of the Serf screen and click on Classmate. You will see a chart with the names of your classmates. To send an email to a classmate, click on the classmate's underlined name. Signature Files The signature file is nothing more than a file you create with a text editor and store on your local hard drive. It usually contains your real first and last name, info such as a phone number and/or address, even a quote. Once you have created the text file, you need to tell your email program whether or not you want the signature file applied to every email you send, also where on your computer it can find the file. Netscape has you do this under Edit, Preferences, Mail and Groups, Identity. First Class allows you to set up a signature file by going to Edit, Preferences, Signature. The Eudora program allows the user to set up a signature file from within the program, going to Tools, Options. You can then type in your signature files text, click on Apply, the O.K.There is a box to check which instructs the program to attach a signature file to every email sent. Each program works in a slightly different way. AOL allows you to create a signature file using AOL Notepad, the text editor that comes with AOL. From the File menu, click on New. Type in your signature. Go to the File menu, click Save. You will be prompted to name the file and select where it will be stored on your computer. When you want to use your signature file in a mail message, go to the File menu. click Open. Navigate to where you stored your signature file, highlight the file name and click Open. Highlight the text of the signature file to select it. From the Edit menu, click Copy. Switch back to the Write Mail form, position the cursor where you want the signature file to be, and click Paste from the Edit menu. Your signature file will be pasted into your message. American Online Users You may experience problems accessing Serf through America Online. If you find Serf continuously prompting you for a log on while trying to access it through AOL, try this workaround:
Problems Accessing Serf America Online Users may have difficulty logging onto Serf and may not be able to submit assignments using this method. If you are an AOL user or are having difficulty logging onto or accessing Serf to retrieve and submit assignments, go to Course Assignments and Due Dates, see what chapter exercises must be submitted for credit, and manually submit your answers to your instructor using the email link on that page. Submitting Late Assignments If you need to submit an assignment at a time past the regular due date, scroll to the bottom of your Serf screen to Syllabus and then click on the Brief Index. After you click on Brief Index, you will see a new screen display. Go to the selections under the title Categories Index. Under Categories Index, find the week for which you need to submit your assignment and click on that. You will see a Course Syllabus screen with the questions for that week. When you are ready to complete and submit your assignment, click on Submit, answer the question, click on Submit. How to Retrieve and Submit Assignments from Alternative Web Site: If you are unable to connect to Serf due to the server being down or unaccessible, please submit your assignments to your instructor within an email message. A copy of the Interlit website with the weekly Serf assignments is available at: www.hartnell.edu/faculty/jlagier/intres/index.html
