Welcome to the Spring 2011 semester. Our physical education department is excited about offering a class designed to instruct athletes and potential coaches on the strategies and tools designed to improve the psychological aspects of sports and competition. I intend on providing an atmosphere in the classroom that will allow each student an opportunity to fully engage themselves with the material presented. I am also anticipating a fun semester, as I witness each student become more confident in regards to the subject matter.

Course Description
This course is designed to create discussion of motivation, communication, stress management, mental imagery, and other cutting edge topics; it is designed to enhance the coach-athlete relationship and to stimulate improved sport performance. Each chapter will begin with learning objectives and will illustrate sport-specific applications of key concepts and principles. Each chapter will have summary reviews of the key points covered, key terms listed in bold to remind students of their importance. At the end of each chapter there are review questions which allow students to check their comprehension of the chapter’s contents.

Part 1 Coaching Philosophy, Communication, Introduction to Mental Skills Training
Part 2 Goal Setting, Imagery, Relaxation and Energization, Self Talk
Part 3 Motivation, Energy Management, Attention, Stress Management, Self-Confidence
Part 4 Mental Plans, Mental Skills Training Programs

Course Objectives
At the end this course the student should be able to:
Understand various coaching styles and philosophies.
Explain the meaning of communication, attentive listening and conflicts/confrontations.
Explain psychological factors and performance and describe mental skills training techniques.
Show that they have experienced imagery and factors influencing its effectiveness.
Describe self talk and the difference between positive and negative thinking.
Demonstrate an understanding of relaxation and stress management techniques.
Develop a mental plan and describe the components of effective mental skills training programs.

There will be small group activities during class meetings that will allow each student an opportunity to express their opinions on various topics. There will be open discussions as a class in large group settings discussing the material as it develops. Guest speakers will provide an opportunity for students to hear from experts for various topics throughout the semester. There will be take home assignments throughout the semester that will be used in class, and they will used for follow up discussions during class meetings.

Research Paper Topic and references – March 16, 2011
Research Paper – April 13, 2011
Mid Term – April 22, 2011

Web Assignment – Select (3) Web -sites that pertain to sport psychology and list them. For each website you must (1) Provide a brief summary, (2) describe why you chose it, (3) If you would recommend it or not … (4) and why?
Research Paper – This paper can cover any topic listed in our textbook. It must be 3-5 pages in length using normal tabbing and spacing. Normal times new roman font , double spaced with course title, Instructor name and class meeting day and time.
Mid Term- 50 multiple choice questions.
Final - TBA
