Construction Technology Day
|
On Wednesday March 12, 2003 - 130 high school students interested in
the Construction field converged on Hartnell to take part in Construction
Technology Day.
This event was made possible through Hartnell College Tech Prep, Monterey Bay Regional Partnership, and the Construction Academy which is a joint venture of Mission Trails ROP and Hartnell College. Many schools participated including all of the HS's in the Salinas Unified High School District, as well as Soledad, Pinnacles, Watsonville, North Monterey County HS and Independent Studies students, Mt. Toro and a small cohort of students from Fremont Elementary school.
The day began at the Western Stage with a career panel of presenters from Architecture, NAWIC, (National Association of Women in Construction), an Independent Contractor, Salinas Valley Builder's Exchange and the Carpenters Training Committee for Northern California. During their presentations speakers drove home the diversity of opportunities available in the construction industry and the kids were listening! After the career panels students were treated to bag lunches and had the opportunity to talk with presenters who had display tables and information on getting started in the field. Then the real excitement took place when students moved to the Mill and Cabinet area to actually do a Hands-On project with help from Industrial arts instructors and students. Every student left with either a tool box or stool and as you can see from the attached photos, a good time was had by all!
