February 13th, 2009

The Hartnell College track and field team avoided the rains Friday and produced some outstanding marks in their Norcal Rotational meet held at Hartnell. The meet was attended by Modesto Junior College, Monterey Peninsula College, Reedley College, and Merritt College.

For the lady Panthers, freshman Treya Winfield won the 400 meters (61.18) and triple jump (35-05.50). Both qualify Winfield to the Norcal meet. Also bettering the Norcal standard was Dominga Arzate (20:21) and Jazmin Suarez (21:23) in the 5000 meter run. Melissa Sandoval took over the Norcal lead in the pole vault (9-0) and bettered her 100 meter time (13.29). Liliana Villagomez won the 100 meter hurdles (17.58). Leticia Saldana won the 800 meters (2:39.2).

Sophomore Daniel Tapia stole the show for the men as he bettered his own school record in the 5000 meter run running solo the entire distance. Tapia's mark of 14:50.45 is the fastest time in the state and nation for junior college runners. The next fastest time is 14:55.56 by Tallam Kipruto of South Plains College in Texas. Hector Aleman (15:48) and Luis Corvera (16:18) also dipped under the Norcal standard. Sophomore Jorge Muniz won the long jump (20-01.50) and triple jump (42-5.50).
