Track and Field Update

This past Saturday the Hartnell track and field team competed at the Maurice Compton Invitational hosted by Merritt College in Oakland. With many of the Coast Conference teams in attendance along with Norcal powers Modesto Junior College and College of the Sequioas in attendance, the Panthers rose to the occasion recording winning marks in 8 events. Sophomore Jazmin Suarez started the day winning her first ever 3000 meter steeplechase in 13:40.74. The marks adds to her 1500 meter and 5000 meter qualifying times to the Norcal championships. Her victory was followed by her male counterpart Luis Corvera winning the men's steeplechase in a conference leading 10:18.65. Covera also has qualifed in the 1500 meter and 5000 meter already. Cesar Puga two of his three throwing events. Puga started the day off launching the hammer to a winning 155'10". Later he added the discus win with a mark of 153'10". Melissa Sandoval continued her unbeaten streak winning the pole vault with a season best 9'0.25". Sophomore Cameron McFadden finally found his groove easily pulling away in the 110 hurdles to a season best 15.52. Fresh off basketball season, former Salinas HS standout Derrick Toney won his first high jump competition as a Panther skying 6'5". In the men's 5000 meter run, teammates Hector Aleman an Daniel Tapia took the top two spots with Aleman edging out his teammate 15:43.34 to 15:43.59. Aleman's time moves him to third in state for community college athletes and second in Norcal to Tapia.

Other notable marks include Chase Knisely (155'0") and Jorge Muniz (152'11") in the men's javelin, Dominga Arzate (20:38.34) 5000 meters, David Atiz (59.54) 400 hurldes, and Antonio Leal (2:00.43) in the 800 meter run.
