Hartnell College Basketball Team to Play in State Championships

The Hartnell College basketball team - the Coast Conference champs - will play in the state championships this week after winning the third round of the regional playoffs on Saturday against Cabrillo College, 64-51.

The Panthers, coached by Frank Carbajal, will play Los Angeles City College at the University of San Diego in San Deigo at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 13. Eight community college teams from throughout California will participate in the state competition.

This is the first time Hartnell's basketball team has played in the state championships since 1995.

Commenting on the team's achievement, Dr. Edward Valeau, Hartnell president, said, "Hats off to coach Carbajal and his team for their winning style. We are proud of you all."

Several team members won Coast Conference honors. E. J. Rowland was named the conference's Player of the Year. He also was presented an All-Conference First Team Award as was Kenneth Barnes. Rudy Lopez and Austin Souza received All-Conference Second Team Awards.
