Sign up to run or walk in the Cinco De Mayo Mariachi-Thon sponsored by Clinica De Salud Del Valle Salinas(CSVS), proceeds will go for scholarships at Hartnell College.
The event will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 4th at the clinic located at 219 N. Sanborn Road in Salinas.
"Walkers and runners will cover either five or two and a half miles. The entry fee is $15 for adults and $6 for under 15 years of age," said Dr. Jerry Held, a physician at the clinic and the person who organized the Mariachi-Thon.
Dr. Held explained, "Our patients are 98 per cent Hispanic and many are migrant. They are having trouble because of all the state budget cuts and can't afford to attend Hartnell College. A chance for education will give them a better life and will also mean less violence in our community."
When the walkers and runners return to CSVS an array of activities awaits them. The Hartnell College Athletic Department will have a soccer demonstration. Walkers and runners will receive a soccer shirt and delicious Hispanic food. Others will be able to join the fun and purchase food at a reasonable price. Photographs will be taken and there will be music provided by the Hartnell College Music Department.
"One very important part of the event will be the Health Fair," Dr. Held said. "We will have approximately 32 stations and do tests for osteoporosis, asthma and diabetes, as well as 22 stations for cancer education."
Dr. Held said he was hoping to have at least 1,500 community members in attendance. "I am really hoping this will go well and can become an annual event. I would even like to help start this even in other impoverished areas."
Hartnell College President Dr. Edward Valeau said, " I am very excited about the Cinco De Mayo Mariachi-Thon. There is a tremendous need for scholarships to help deserving students."
