Hartnell SIFE Team Wins Regional Competition for Third Straight Year

March 21st, 2009

The Hartnell College Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team accomplished a rare feat last week in Hollywood: It became three-peat winners of the SIFE USA Regional Competition.

The March 18th event was one of 16 regional competitions slated to be held across the United States in March and April. Winners proceed to the national competition, which will be held in Philadelphia from May 10 through 12.

Hartnell’s SIFE team was graded on its oral presentation to judges from the nation’s top businesses, and its written annual report that chronicled its community service and outreach activities for the year.

The SIFE club has impacted the community in many ways this year, helping starter businesses with marketing strategies and providing business education to students in K-12. One of its larger projects was the two-day SIFE Business Exposition, held in November, which included seminars on resume writing, starting your own business, insurance, taxes, global investing, and equal opportunity employment. All presentations were given in both English and Spanish. This Expo brought together experts in business matters with community members interested to learn more about business, finances, career development, and access to credit.

SIFE is an international non-profit organization active on more than 1,400 college and university campuses in 48 countries. SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that teach market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills, and business ethics. Their projects are judged at competition on creativity, innovation, and effectiveness.
