Hands On Career Fair At Hartnell College - Pathways to Success

March 25th, 2003

Area high school students are invited to come to Hartnell College on April 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the non-traditional hands-on career fair. "We are expecting over 1,100 students this year and we have more than 50 presenters from business, industry and our community," said School to College Coordinator at Hartnell Denise Cook.

All of the presenters volunteer their time to give these high school students a chance to become aware of the career options available to them. Cook said, "We encourage the student to wear casual clothes and comfortable shoes because they will be going from booth-to-booth and visiting designated classrooms at Hartnell College. There will be volunteer staff to help them and we encourage them to ask lots of questions."

The students will see many of the career choices available to them and what training is required. "All this presented in a fun, interesting and a reality check of what the field is really like, " Cook explained.

The Seaside Fire Department will demonstrate the Jaws of Life, ROP Floriculture will assist students in making corsages and the Twin Lakes Massage School will give massages. Hartnell College Electronics, Agriculture, Welding and Dance Company will be represented and the college's Music Department will assist students in recording digital music. Rock climbing and self defense will also be there.

"The trade and apprenticeship professions will be represented," Cook said. "The National Association of Women in Construction, The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Sheet Metal and Cement Masons will be on hand and The Carpenters Training Committee will have a nail driving contest. And that's just a sample, there are many more!"
