Poetic Voices + Voces Poeticas, United by Poetry, is the theme for the fourth annual poetry celebration presented by Hartnell College. "Our program will be held on Friday, April 4th from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Music Hall at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB)," said Hartnell College Instructor and co-director for the competition Maria Garcia Tabor.
The contest winners for the competition are: first place Justin Karpel, University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC); second place Maja Zmyslowski, from CSUMB; third place Sofia Jimenez, from Hartnell College; fourth place Lani Clough, from CSUMB; and Jennifer Roseman, from Gavilan College took fifth place.
"Our featured poet will be Xochiquetzel Candelaria," Tabor said. "She was the recipient of the National Hispanic for the Arts Award in 1998. She graduated from New York University and received her MA in English and American Literature with a concentration in Poetry. Her work has been published in The Nation, The Indiana Review, Gulf Coast Magazine and The Louisiana.Literature Journal," Tabor concluded.
Judges for the event were: Two nationally known poets, Matt Friday and Gibson Fay-LeBlanc; co-directors of the competition, Tabor and Diana Garcia (CSUMB); Hartnell College President Dr. Edward Valeau; Dr. Henry Villanueva, Associate V.P., Academic Programs, Institute for World Languages and Culture; Irene Rasmussen, coordinator for student services at Hartnell College; staff members from Hartnell's Circo Poetry Club, Homestead Review Literary Journal and the Associated Student Senate; from CSUMB staff members from the Institute for Human Communication, New Media Services and World Theater.
Faculty coordinators were: David Gitin from Monterey Peninsula College, Diana Garcia and Frances Payne Adler from CSUMB, Kimberly Smith from Gavilan, Charles Atkinson from UCSC and Tabor from Hartnell.
