Hartnell College and CSU-Monterey Bay announce the eighth annual Poetic Voices Poetry Festival, to be held on April 18 at 7 p.m. at the CSUMB Ballroom.
This yearís featured readers will be award-winning poets Maria Garcia Tabor and Diana Garcia. Maria Garcia Tabor, an English instructor and poet at Hartnell College, is the author of the poetry collection Surrender Dorothy and is editor of The Homestead Review, a literary journal based at Hartnell College. Diana Garcia, a professor in the Division of Humanities and Communication at CSU Monterey Bay, is the author of When Living Was a Labor Camp, which won a 2001 American Book Award.
The festival also will feature seven student poets who have submitted their work for literary prizes. Krystal Simpson, reality TV star of the MTV series "Iím from Rolling Stone" and former winner of the Circo Award, will serve as master of ceremonies for the event.
Poetic Voices Poetry Festival celebrates the poetry of college students in the tri- county area of Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties. Two student poets from Hartnell, Kristen Ramirez and Katey Ball, will be awarded the Faith Webster poetry prize of $500 each. The student winners of the Circo Poetry prizes are from CSUMB and from Hartnell College. More than $1,500 in prize money will be awarded.
The event, which will conclude with a book signing, is sponsored by the Homestead Review, Circo Poetry Club, and others.
The festival is free and open to the public.
