Science and Health Fun for the Whole Family

Science and health take center stage at the second annual Family Science & Health Day at Hartnell College on Saturday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Hartnell’s main campus at 411 Central Avenue in Salinas.

Children and families will have the opportunity to use a solar telescope, participate in physics demonstrations, learn about astronomy, biology, geology, oceanography, and zoology, learn how to eat healthy and live healthy, enjoy soccer activities with Hartnell College men’s soccer coach Daniel Ortega, visit the amphibian and reptile zoo, play in the Kids Zone, and be among the first to see the new Planetarium show of “Astronaut.”

Hartnell’s amphitheater will be the venue for music and dance presentations by several performing arts group, including the Barton School’s Folklorico, Danzantes Aztecas from Dr. Oscar Loya Elementary School, Mariachi Juvenile Alisal, the Alisal High School rock band, and Ritmo Latino from the Alisal Center for the Fine Arts.

Special this year is a talk by NASA astronaut Dr. Jim Newman at 2 p.m. in the main stage theatre. Dr. Newman is a veteran of four space flights, spending more than 43 days in space, including six spacewalks. He has worked on the International Space Station in Russia. He currently serves as a visiting professor at the Naval Postgraduate School.

Family Science & Health Day coincides with two other Hartnell celebrations: Earth Day, with hands-on activities and demonstrations of sustainability and recycling, and the Indigenous Peoples Pow Wow, which will run until 9 p.m. in various locations on campus.

The event is free and open to the public. Free parking is available on campus. Schedules will be available at the event. Healthy food and beverages will be available for sale.

The event is a joint project of Hartnell College and the Alisal Union School District, and is sponsored by many community groups, including Champions for Change and the Nutrition Network, and a generous grant from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation Youth Fund.
