The Rev. Katherine Thanas of the Santa Cruz Zen Center will discuss "An Introduction to Zen Meditation" at Hartnell College on Friday, April 25, at 7 p.m.
Free and open to the public, the talk will be held in the Performing Arts Building, room 125.
Rev. Thanas' discussion is part of the Hartnell College Foundation's "Presents" series and is sponsored by the foundation and the First National Bank of Central California.
The one-hour lecture will cover the basic philosophy of Zen Buddhism. There will be time for questions.
The abbot at the Santa Cruz Zen Center, Rev. Thanas trained for more than 20 years at the San Francisco Zen Center. She was ordained there as a priest in 1975, and began teaching at the Santa Cruz Zen Center in 1989.
She also founded the Monterey Bay Zen Center in 1988 and has taught in both communities since then. In July of last year, she was installed as the first abbot of the Santa Cruz Zen Center.
