Leaders of four community colleges and several state officials will meet at Hartnell College in Salinas on Thursday, April 28, to discuss issues facing the two-year institutions of higher learning.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the board room of Hartnell's Classroom/Administration Building (CAB). The public is invited to attend.
The regional meeting will bring together the boards of trustees and presidents of Hartnell, Cabrillo College of Aptos, Gavilan College of Gilroy and Monterey Peninsula College.
They will meet with California Secretary of State Bruce McPherson and several legislators, including Assemblymen Simon Salinas and John Laird; Sen. Jeff Denham; Chancellor Denise Denton of the University of California, Santa Cruz; Margaret Quinones and Sondra Saterfield, members of the board of governors of the California Community Colleges; and Nicolas Papadakis, executive director of the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments.
It has been a tradition of the local community college boards to meet together once a year, according to Hartnell President Edward J. Valeau. "The purpose of the meeting", he said, "is to acquaint the boards with one another, identify mutual regional concerns, receive relevant information concerning community colleges, legislation, and open communication between the boards and state officials. We look forward to this gathering and anticipate an informative meeting."
Valeau and Aaron Johnson, president of Hartnell's board of trustees recently sent a letter to President Bush expressing concern over program cuts outlined in Bush's 2006 budget that will impact community colleges across the nation, including Hartnell.
