A variety of events-including music, dancing and food booths-are scheduled at Hartnell College to celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Monday, May 5.
The Associate Students invite community members as well as Hartnell students to attend the celebration, according to Irene Rasmussen, Hartnell's student activities coordinator.
Cinco de Mayo marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French in an 1862 battle, and has come to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism.
Most of Hartnell's events will be held in the quad area adjacent to the College Center.
The day begins with breakfast from 8 to 10:30 a.m. The Los Padres Elementary School Folklorico Dancers will perform at 11:15, followed by Mariachi Vargas at noon and the Sherwood School Aztec Dancers at 12:30 p.m. A variety of foods will be on sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Various contests will be held during the day, and the Circo Poetry Club will share poetry. Music also will be provided by 93.5 FM The Bomb radio.
