Hartnell College will host the 11th Annual Poetic Voices Festival on Thursday, May 6, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in room 125 of the Performing Arts Building on the main campus at 411 Central Avenue in Salinas. The featured reader will be Cynthia Cruz.
This event will include readings by the winners of two poetry competitions: the Circo Award, an intercollegiate poetry competition for students from Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties, and the Faith Webster Fraser poetry award, available to Hartnell College students.
The award winners will be announced at the festival, and the prizes total more than $1200.
The featured reader is Cynthia Cruz, whose poems are highlighted in the Spring 2010 issue of the Homestead Review, www.hartnell.edu/homestead_review. Cruz’s poems have been widely published in many journals including the American Poetry Review, Paris Review, Boston Review, Denver Quarterly, Kenyon Review, and Guernica, among others. Her first poetry collection, Ruin, was published in 2006. Cruz teaches at Sarah Lawrence College and is the visiting artist in the Rutgers-Newark MFA in Creative Writing Program.
The festival is sponsored by the Homestead Review Literary magazine and Circo Poetry club with a grant from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation Youth fund.
