Hartnell College Family Intern Day at Naval Postgraduate School, April 28

April 27th, 2012

The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) will host Hartnell science students and their families for an Intern Family Day on Saturday, April 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The 27 students have been accepted by NPS professors for research internships in various laboratories this summer.

The morning will consist of small group tours of research labs for the students and their parents, and a chance to meet many of the staff of NPS, followed by a large group assembly at which two alumni of the NPS-Hartnell internship program and the father of one student will discuss their experiences in the program. Students Genaro Sanchez, Claudia Garcia, and Claudia's father, Felipe Garcia, will discuss their experiences and answer questions.

The Family Day event with students and their families--all from the Salinas Valley--launches this year's internships. This incredible partnership's success depends on the encouragement of scientific mentors from NPS, Hartnell College, and family members. Previous interns are now in undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. programs throughout the country, or working in science and research-based careers.

This event and internship program is part of the Community College Catalyst Program run by the Cebrowski Institute at the Naval Postgraduate School.

THE SCHEDULE:

9:30 Welcome from the NPS Chief of Staff.
9:45 Small group tours of labs sponsoring interns (20 minutes each)
11:30 Assembly in the Mechanical Engineering Auditorium: two alumni from the internship program and a father will discuss their experiences with the program and answer questions.
12:30 End of program
