On Thursday, May 15, 2008, Hartnell College will host the 2008 Poetic Voices Festival from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the College Center. The guest speaker will be Brandi Walker.
The festival will feature readings by the student winners of the Poetic Voices intercollegiate poetry competition. The competition, now in its ninth year, is open to college students in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties. The top five poets will receive the Circo Award for excellence in writing, which includes a cash prize.
The featured guest speaker is Brandi Walker, whose essay on gender-based violence in conflict areas is featured in the Spring 2008 issue of the Homestead Review. Ms. Walker, who teaches African refugees at the Montgomery County Refugee Center at Montgomery College in the Washington, DC area, has worked in several African countries on women’s health issues, including reproductive health and gender-based violence.
The festival is sponsored by the Homestead Review literary magazine and Circo Poetry Club with a grant from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation Youth Fund.
Donations from this event will benefit the Crisis Counseling Center at Hartnell College. Representatives from the Monterey County Rape Crisis Center will be on hand to distribute information.
