HEART is 2014 International Firm of the Year

May 5th, 2014

SALINAS, Calif. - Hartnell Community College District is proud of the Hayward Engineering and Architectural Research Team (HEART), champions as the 2014 International Firm of the Year! Hartnell students Luis Lopez, Steven Mendenhall, Jaida Johnson, and Anthony Miranda, impressed the judges with their design and professionalism.

Last Thursday and Friday, they participated in the Mock Architecture Firm Competition - International and National Skyscraper Challenge. This is the first time in the competition's six-year history that a community college takes the win. Last year, a team from Spain won this recognition.

A press conference will be held in their honor Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at 411 Central Avenue, - Building B, in room 208 Salinas, CA. (Building across from the Library, corner of Central and Homestead). Meet the team, their mentors, and the design.

With the theme of "Strength to Soar," young design professionals were challenged to produce an iconic super-tall building for Seoul, South Korea in the collegiate category. HEART designed a mixed-use facility with residential and retail space intended for an athletic and fitness-oriented clientele. The ground floors are designed to provide significant stadium capacity for future international events.

"The judges were impressed with the design, with the group's presentation about Hartnell College, and on their overall maturity and professionalism," said mentor Thomas Rettenwender, architect with Ecologic Design Lab. "The judge from Korea is talking with developers in Seoul to take a look at the promising design."
