CHISPA, Hartnell College, and City of Salinas announce the groundbreaking of a new Green Build design affordable single-family home in Salinas.

May 13, 2010

On Thursday May 13, 2010 at 11 a.m., CHISPA President/CEO Alfred Diaz-Infante, Hartnell’s Vice President of Advancement Beverly Grova, and city leaders will join community and business leaders at a groundbreaking ceremony for a single family home located at 124 Soledad Street in Salinas.

In 2004, CHISPA, Hartnell College, and the City of Salinas formed a partnership to offer real world on-site construction experience to students enrolled in Hartnell’s Center for Sustainable Construction Program. On Thursday, CHISPA representatives, elected officials, community leaders, Hartnell College personnel, and developers will come together to celebrate a partnership that has resulted in three affordable homes for local families and to break ground for a fourth home.

The City of Salinas provided the vacant lot and ongoing assistance by the Public Works Department. CHISPA and Hartnell College students constructed the home.

The Soledad Street home incorporates unique Green Build design materials, built according to Title 24 guidelines and Monterey County Business Council’s “StepUp2Green” standards.  The home will meet energy star program requirements, will be sustainable in design and environmentally responsible, and will follow universal design methods to be fully accessible.

CHISPA, Hartnell College, and the City of Salinas look forward to providing further affordable housing opportunities in Salinas.

Light refreshments will be served for guests following the key ceremony.

The family and speakers will be available for interviews by the media.
