Hartnell College Students Graduate on Thursday, June 4

May 23rd, 2009

Hartnell College will celebrate commencement on Thursday, June 4, 2009, at 7 p.m. in the Main Gymnasium on its campus at 411 Central Avenue in Salinas.

More than 500 students from the Class of 2009 will celebrate the awarding of their associate’s degrees at the evening ceremony. Another 123 students have earned certificates of achievement.

Participating students are summer and fall 2008 graduates and spring 2009 graduates. This year’s class has six valedictorians: Paul Fuller, Jessica Inman, Mary Pacheco, Cristian Silva, Maria Tavares, and Sergio Teran.

The College will honor Joe Pezzini with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Mr. Pezzini attended Hartnell from 1977-79, and transferred to UC-Davis, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science and management. He went on to earn an MBA from the Agribusiness Institute at Santa Clara University. Mr. Pezzini has been a leading force in the agricultural industry for the last 26 years and serves on several boards, including the Hartnell College Ag Business and Marketing Committee and Ag Against Hunger. He has won many awards, including being named the 2007 Agricultural Leader of the Year. He is currently the Chief Operating Officer of Ocean Mist Farms. Mr. Pezzini and his wife, Mary, have two children, David and Bess.

The College also will make a special recognition of one of its trustees, Brad Rice, and his father, Bob Rice, who are the only father and son trustee pair among the 1,177 community colleges in the country. Brad has been a trustee for Hartnell since 1997, following in his father’s footsteps, who began serving the College of the Siskiyous as a trustee in 1992. Bob and Brad provide strong leadership in financial accountability and stewardship to the community colleges they serve. They offer their time, energy, skills, and expertise to improve access to education in the communities in which they live.

There will be a reception honoring the graduates in the commons area of the College Center following the ceremony.
