Hartnell College's Child Development Center is now accepting applications for enrollment of preschool children from low-income families. The program for the 2003-04 school year is free for income-eligible families.
Classes are offered five days a week at Hartnell's main and east campuses. Morning sessions are from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.; afternoon sessions run from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
School begins August 17 and at least one parent must attend an orientation to the program held the first two days of each semester, according to Program Director Linda Taylor.
Children must be three years old by Dec. 2, 2003. "We give priority to children who will be four by that date, but they cannot have reached their fifth birthday," Taylor said.
Free preschool requires five-day attendance, and children must be toilet trained. Families also must provide a minimum of 12 hours of volunteer time a semester.
Taylor says she and her staff "encourage children to actively explore the environment, make choices and become independent thinkers."
