Hartnell College will celebrate commencement on Friday, June 6, 2008, at 7 p.m. in the Main Gymnasium on its campus at 411 Central Avenue in Salinas.
Approximately 470 students from the Class of 2008 will celebrate the awarding of their associate’s degrees at the evening ceremony. Another hundred students have earned certificates of achievement.
Participating students are summer and fall 2007 graduates and spring 2008 graduates. The valedictorian for the Class of 2008 is Sandra Marie Degnan.
Ms. Kari Lee Valdes, president of the Board of Trustees, will confer the degrees.
The College will honor August Scornaienchi with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Mr.Scornaienchi attended Hartnell in the 1950s, and transferred to San Jose State, where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He earned his master’s degree in Education Administration from CSU East Bay. He devoted his career to public education, creating opportunities for all students, especially minority and marginalized students. He retired from the position of Superintendent of Schools in Alameda County after a 50-year career as an educational leader. He has served the community and Hartnell in many ways, including serving as president of the Hartnell College Foundation and as a board member of the National Steinbeck Center.
Mr. Scornaienchi is one of three Hartnell graduates who served as Superintendents of Schools, along with Dr. Bill Barr and Dr. Rick Wentworth.
There will be a reception honoring the graduates in the commons area of the College Center following the ceremony.
