Hartnell College and Union Agree to Contract

June 4th, 2008

At the regular June meeting of the Board of Trustees of Hartnell College on Tuesday, June 3, the board approved a three-year contract with its L-39 employees.

The contract includes a $100 monthly increase for health benefits to cover all out-of-pocket expenses of healthcare insurance premiums, an additional longevity step of 2.5 percent after 20 years of service, and an increase for each member in the allotted shoe allowance. L-39 employees will enjoy two additional holidays.

The union agreed to freeze salaries for one year, reopening discussions on salary and health and welfare benefits after one year. The agreement also includes a Most Favored Nation Clause on wages and benefits.

The International Union of Operating Engineers, Stationary Local 39, represents Hartnell’s custodial, maintenance, grounds, and cafeteria employees.

The contract runs through June 30, 2011.

Hartnell College, one of California’s 109 community colleges, is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Established in 1920, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the state. Hartnell has two campuses in Salinas and an education center in King City to serve all the education and workforce training needs of the greater Salinas Valley.
