Hartnell College Names Nursing Director

June 26th, 2007

After more than a year-long search, Hartnell College named Dr. Catherine Ryan to be its new director of nursing. She will begin on August 13.

Dr. Ryan is currently on faculty at Hawai’i Pacific University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate nursing students, focusing on issues such as women’s health, nurse midwifery, and leadership and management. She recently has been leading that school's nursing program on an interim basis.

Dr. Ryan, who completed her doctoral degree in nursing practice at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and her undergraduate and master’s degrees at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., is no stranger to the Salinas Valley. She taught in Hartnell’s nursing program in 1997 and has provided service at three of the area’s hospitals, including work at Natividad’s neonatal unit, and at the former Fort Ord. She is a certified nurse midwife.

Current Interim Nursing Director Donna Duell is excited about Dr. Ryan’s background in teaching, as it will directly benefit Hartnell’s students. “She will be a strong leader who works well with students,” she said. Ms. Duell, who came out of retirement to rebuild Hartnell’s program as its interim director, will remain on board through December to ensure a smooth transition.

Dr. Katherine Schrader, dean of science, mathematics, and health sciences said, “Dr. Ryan is an exceptional candidate. We are very fortunate to be able to attract her back to Hartnell. She will build on the excellent work of Donna Duell to grow and strengthen the program.”

Hartnell's Nursing Program recently boasted a 100 per cent pass rate among its graduates taking the state licensing exam.
