Karina Salcedo of Salinas, who just completed her first year at Hartnell College, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation to continue her studies at Hartnell this fall.
A psychology major, she is the first member of her family to attend college. Upon graduation from Hartnell next year, Salcedo plans to transfer to the University of San Diego.
During her first two semesters at Hartnell, she was on the President's Honor Role and maintained a grade point average between 3.5 and 4.0. In the spring, she earned all As and one B in her classes.
The Coke scholarship is based on demonstrated academic success and participation in community service. For the latter, Selcedo was heavily involved at St. Mary of Nativity Church, teaching Catechism to children preparing for their First Communion. She also sang in one of St. Mary's choirs and represented her choir in meetings with the church's six other choirs.
