News Conference Planned at Hartnell College to Announce $6.6 Million, Six-Year Federal Grant That Will Benefit Students in Two Middle Schools in Salinas Union High School District

Where: Community Room, New Hartnell College Library/Learning Resource Center

Why: To announce new partnership between Hartnell College and the Salinas Union High School District that will benefit more than 11,000 students in El Sausal and La Paz middle schools over a six-year period by improving their academic performance, high school retention and graduation rates, and assisting them in preparing for college. The $6.6 million GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) grant comes from the U.S. Department of Education. Other partners involved with the grant are Alisal High School; Partners for Peace, a city group promoting non-violence; and SUBA, an hispanic organization dedicated to improving the community.
