The Hartnell College Planetarium will host a space science workshop for area elementary and middle school teachers. “Ready-to-go Space Science Activities for the Classroom” will be facilitated by members of UC Berkeley’s Center for Science Education. This professional development opportunity is open to all area K – 8 teachers. The focus of the workshop will be the connection between the Sun and Earth, highlighting California science standards for every grade level. The workshop will take place over two Saturdays, September 11 and October 16, 2010. Registration is open to the first 25 applicants. A $100 honorarium will be provided to each fully participating teacher.
Both sessions will take place on the main campus of Hartnell College at 411 Central Avenue in Salinas. No background in space science is required. The initial session will provide lesson plans, materials, and training that will allow teachers to incorporate inquiry based learning in their classrooms. It will take place on September 11, from 9am to 5pm. A follow up meeting will take place on October 16, from 10am to 6pm, and will involve participation in a festive community event for local families celebrating Mayan culture and astronomy.
