Hartnell College Presents Barry Masteller: Along the Way

August 31st, 2013

SALINAS, Calif. Hartnell College Gallery proudly presents an exhibition of paintings by longtime Monterey County artist Barry Masteller as the first show of the new school year. This exhibit is open now through October 10, 2013, including 19 noteworthy examples drawn from Masteller's output over the past twenty five years.

Admission to the exhibition is FREE. Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday, 10:00a.m.-1:00p.m. and 6:00-9:00 p.m. The Hartnell Gallery is located in the Visual Arts Building on the main Hartnell campus at 411 Central Avenue (entrance from Alisal Street).

Two series, Natural Occurrences and White Paintings, provide insightful looks at the artist's fascination and exploration of the natural world and the physical act of painting. In each, the work is slowly built up with strokes of color. "Paint is mere paint until the hand and mind of the painter sets it free and uses it to create something of visual-magic that has the power to stir emotion, memory and feeling," said Masteller about this art form.

Past exhibitions by Masteller cover a span of fifty years at important venues throughout California, as well as nationally. His work is in numerous public and private collections including The Achenbach Foundation at the Legion of Honor-San Francisco, Monterey Museum of Art, Crocker Art Museum-Sacramento, and San Jose Museum of Art.

Funding for this exhibition comes from the Hartnell College Foundation through the Burrell Leonard Bequest. For more information, contact Gallery Director, Gary Smith at gsmith@hartnell.edu.
