Six music students from Hartnell College have been named finalists in the Sound Horizons Composition Contest 2003, sponsored by the New Music Works Ensemble of Santa Cruz.
The Hartnell student composers are Reginald Badiny, Jackson Bannwart, Chris Barrios, Casey Coelho, Siew Moi, and Jacob Z. Torres III.
Their compositions, along with four other works by student composers from other colleges and universities, will be performed by professional musicians of the New Music Work Ensemble on Friday, Sept. 26, at 8 p.m. in the Kuumbwa Jazz Center, 320 Cedar St., Santa Cruz.
Of the 10 finalists in the competition, six are from Hartnell College.
The winner of the contest will receive the $500 Bud Kretschmer Award.
Hartnell's finalists wrote compositions this past spring as part of music harmony classes. Currently, Bannwart, Coelho, Moi and Torres are second-year harmony students at Hartnell. Badiny has graduated and Barrios has transferred to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as a classical guitar major. All six compositions are quartets for flute, clarinet and two cellos.
