Hartnell Scientists to be City’s Newest Champions

November 20th, 2007

Long-time Hartnell physics instructor and one of his most successful students will be honored by Mayor Dennis Donahue and the City of Salinas at the beginning of today’s City Council meeting at 4 p.m. in the Salinas Rotunda.

The City of Champions recognition ceremony will honor Dr. Jesse Cude, who taught physics for 30 years at Hartnell College, mentoring and inspiring hundreds of area students to pursue careers as scientists, and Dr. Joseph Hennawi, a 1996 Hartnell graduate who is a Hubble Fellow in astrophysics at UC Berkeley, and considered one of the world’s leading experts in the esoteric field of Dark Matter.

Doctors Cude and Hennawi have always made science education outreach an important part of their careers, and are now collaborating on a grant from the National Science Foundation to engage Salinas Valley elementary students in the study of science.
