Hartnell College President Named Representative to European Education Council

August 18th, 2006

Edward J. Valeau, president of Hartnell College, was selected to represent U.S. college and university presidents at a recent forum in Strasbourg, France, of the prestigious Council of Europe.

The forum focused on higher education's responsibility for fostering democratic culture, civic engagement, and human rights.

Valeau was named an attendee through the American Council on Education where he sits as a commissioner on international education.

The Council of Europe was founded in 1949 and has several goals, including the defending of human rights; assisting European nations in carrying out and consolidating political, legal and constitutional reform in parallel with economic reform; and providing know-how in areas such as local democracy, education, culture and the environment.

The council serves 21 European countries, but has granted "observer status" to five world-wide countries, including the United States.
