Hartnell College STEM Colloquium
Our speaker’s series
started up in fall 2008. Throughout the fall semester eight different
speakers gave presentations to students and staff of the science and math
department at Hartnell
College. A number of the speakers were former Hartnell
Alumni who have gone on to interesting careers in STEM fields, many of them doing cutting edge research in
industry and academia. Whatever the particular subject matter of the
talk, the main purpose is to expose our students to scientists, mathematicians,
and engineers and the work that they are doing. The speakers usually
trace their path from their high school and college days to their current
occupation and then give a technical talk on some interesting aspect of their
work. These talks have ranged through subjects in the fields of biology,
engineering, nuclear physics and veterinary medicine. Besides the
educational aspect of the talk, it gives our students an opportunity to meet
and interact with professionals in subject areas that they may have an interest
in and to see them as ordinary people who have achieved success by hard work,
determination and enthusiasm for their field of interest. These speakers
serve as excellent role models and expose our students to many stimulating
ideas and potential careers that they might not normally encounter in the
classroom.
The series continues this
spring with many new and interesting talks scheduled. Talks are generally
on Thursday or Friday afternoons in Merrill Hall room M-1. The talks
begin at 2:00 pm with
refreshments and an opportunity to mingle with the speakers starting at 1:30 pm.
